“Great place to share 60th birthday across two generations, and to find somewhere that would accommodate a small dog.”

Fitted our needs perfectly. The location was even better once we'd discovered the direct path to the beach, which isn't signposted. We spent the first two days toiling up and down to the beach via the road. But the short straight path gives much easier access. A brilliant stay. We'd recommend

The property

Tucked away in a secluded cul de sac in the coastal village of Polzeath in Cornwall, is this delightful three-bedroom detached house, Northern Lights. Enjoying an all-ground layout, a private balcony and easy access via a footpath opposite the house to Polzeath’s glorious beach, Northern Lights makes for a fantastic coastal getaway for a family of six or group of friends. Park up in the off-road parking space on the private driveway, with additional spaces available on-street, before unloading your bags and stepping into your new holiday home. Be welcomed into the open-plan living space, and look forward to soaking up the last of the day’s sunshine out on the balcony. Retreat to the sofas in the sitting room once it cools and snuggle up in front of your favourite film on the Smart TV.

In winter bask in the glow and warmth of the wood burning stove. Prepare meals in the well-equipped kitchen, with electric oven and hob, electric Rayburn, microwave and dishwasher, before gathering around the dining table for six to tuck-in. On warmer days, why not make dinner an alfresco occasion and sit out on the rear patio, (outside sofa and deckchairs) where you can fire up the charcoal barbecue and treat your guests to grilled delights! Enjoy the modern bathroom with bath, shower and underfloor heating while your towel warms on the heated towel rail.

At the end of the day retire to one of three bedrooms, a double, and two twins. There is a hot outside shower awaiting your return from surfing adventures and you can also take advantage of the handy external utility room, which houses a washing machine and tumble dryer.

There is a clothes line perfect for drying off swimsuits and towels after a day at the beach! Head just up the hill to the Oystercatcher pub for a tasty bite to eat, here you can expect fresh seafood and a relaxed dining experience with the option of alfresco, perfect for those evenings when you’d rather skip the kitchen. No need to get in the car to access the beach! Via the convenient wooded footpath head down the valley a short stroll to the beach and the centre of the village of Polzeath where you will find a good selection of cafes, restaurants and shops for stocking up your fridge.

Have a drink at the waterfront bars there or indulge with a stone baked pizza on the beach.

Watch the sun go down over the surf from the terrace of the Atlantic Bar and Kitchen across the beach at New Polzeath.

Wander over to the glorious sandy beach where you can paddle in the rock pools, bathe in the clear waters or try your hand at surfing or stand up paddle boarding.

The nearby shops and surf schools offer all the equipment you will need to ensure you are kitted out. Walkers will delight at the scenic Pentire Point nearby, a National Trust site which offers rugged clifftop views and wildlife spotting of dolphin, seals and peregrine falcons! From here the energetic hiker can take the SW coastal path via Lundy to Port Quin, where you will find the charming Doyden Castle, a homely 19th-century property with expansive sea views.

A few miles on brings you to Port Isaac –home of TV’s Doc Martin and the Fishermen’s Friends sea shanty singers. Golfers can enjoy the Point, an 18 hole course just across the valley at Rosearrow, and most famously the two challenging links courses of St Enodoc nearby at Rock. Be sure to make time for a visit to Padstow by taking the foot ferry across from Rock.

Padstow is home to the National Lobster Hatchery (with the option to adopt your own hatchling), along with Rick Stein’s seafood restaurants, a picturesque harbour and the well-known Camel Trail, -a cyclist's haven. Head inland to explore Pencarrow House or the National Trust property at Landhyrock, Cardinham Woods and Bodmin Moor which are fantastic for family days out or couples to discover together. For a getaway to the coast like no other, choose Northern Lights.

About the location

POLZEATH

Wadebridge 7.5 miles; Padstow 16 miles.

The seaside village of Polzeath boasts a sandy beach, which is bordered by rock pools and is acclaimed to be one of the best surfing beaches in the country. Polzeath itself has a number of small shops, cafes and restaurants, and the South West Coast Path, a 630-mile route, runs through the village. Just over seven miles away is the popular market town of Wadebridge, which is set alongside the River Camel and offers an array of shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as North Cornwall's only family-owned cinema. There’s wonderful countryside in the area, with the renowned Camel Trail passing through the town, and the nearby town of Padstow, with its harbour, pastel-washed medieval houses and celebrated restaurants is well worth exploring. Within driving distance is the UK surfing capital of Newquay, with over 11 miles of golden sandy beaches. Polzeath is an excellent base for exploring this part of Cornwall.
